The WriQ® Score

The WriQ score is a recognised writing standard. WriQ is the writing achievement standard. Establishing common expectations in writing achievement at a state or national level by the end of a designated grade level.

WriQ the metric

WriQ provides a standard measurement for writing.

Most people will be familiar with Lexiles in reading, however to date, there has been no such equivalent to demonstrate students’ writing proficiency, attainment and growth over time. Until now...

Knowing how a student (or school, district or even state) is performing with regards to writing is difficult. WriQ provides a meaningful number to help understand what the writing attainment levels are for students by taking into account several useful metrics along with a national norms comparison.

Data collected by WriQ (from more than 85,000 samples) has allowed for the creation of standardised norms by grade in areas such as: accuracy (correct word sequences minus incorrect word sequences) text maturity and text diversity.

How it works

WriQ uses a powerful computer algorithm that assesses each student’s writing in Google Docs, replacing the time-consuming task for teachers of assessing written passages manually

To build WriQ we’ve collected an enormous data set that has allowed us to create standardised norms for assessing writing, which we combine to create the WriQ Score.

Through these norms, WriQ will help teachers evaluate their students' written communication skills and provide meaningful feedback to improve their students' writing over time - just as Lexile levels do with reading.

This WriQ Score is directly embedded into the student’s work, giving instant feedback to help students improve their writing.

Building a complete picture

WriQ calculates each student’s attainment level as a writer on the basis of these qualitative factors like text maturity, text diversity, correct word sequences, spelling accuracy, punctuation correctness, and grammar correctness.

Once that scoring is complete, teachers can assess their students’ writing from a qualitative standpoint through the use of Texthelp-built rubrics. These rubrics are based on the student’s grade and the genre of writing, measuring everything from plot, narrative techniques, language and more.

Through these metrics, WriQ can give teachers, administrators and parents a more meaningful picture of each student’s overall maturity and sophistication as a writer.

Understanding the use of the WriQ Score

Writing is a complex cognitive ability that is foundational to the development of communication and thinking skills.

Writing instruction helps students learn to write for different audiences and purposes. Research has demonstrated that frequent writing and assessment is the best way to help students learn to write well. Read this independent research brief from Prof. Dave Edyburn - University of Central Florida to understand what makes WriQ uniquely powerful and the value and use of the WriQ score.
